Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Accra – Akwaaba!

Overnight at Alisa Hotel, Accra. Meals included: Dinner.

Touch down in Accra, Ghana’s lively capital. You’ll be warmly welcomed by Root Tours representatives and escorted to your hotel. Enjoy a welcome drink at the hotel and participate in an orientation session. Dressmakers will take measurements and sew clothes for interested participants.

Day 2

Accra City Tour

After breakfast, set off on a guided sightseeing tour of Accra, the vibrant capital city of Ghana. As the country’s administrative, economic, and cultural hub since 1877, Accra offers a dynamic blend of history, modernity, and local life.

Begin your orientation tour through the bustling districts of the city, witnessing key landmarks that define Accra’s identity. Visit the Artiste Alliance Gallery, a celebrated space showcasing contemporary Ghanaian and African art. Continue to the W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Pan-African Culture, a memorial honoring the life and work of the influential scholar and civil rights activist.

Next, explore Independence/Black Star Square, one of Ghana’s most iconic sites, symbolizing the nation’s freedom and pride. Learn about the events that led to Ghana’s independence and the vision of its founding father.

Proceed to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, a serene and historical space dedicated to Ghana’s first president and a leading figure in Africa’s liberation movement. The park features Nkrumah’s mausoleum, a museum detailing his life and Pan-African dream, his residence, and the Eternal Flame of African Liberation, surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens.

Conclude your tour at the Arts Centre for National Culture, where you can immerse yourself in Ghana’s rich craft traditions. Test your bargaining skills at the open-air market while shopping for locally made items, including vibrant fabrics, handwoven textiles, carvings, jewelry, and other unique West African souvenirs.

Return to your hotel for overnight rest.

Day 3

Adventure in the Kakum Canopy Walk & Historical Slave Dungeon Tour (Cape Coast Castle)

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and depart for Cape Coast. Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic drive through the historic Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, one of the few remaining tropical rainforests in West Africa.

Here, you’ll have the option to embark on a 2-kilometer guided nature walk through the forest, where you’ll encounter a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna, many of which have medicinal properties. Alternatively, for the more adventurous, experience the canopy walkway, suspended 40 meters above the forest floor, offering breathtaking views of the rainforest canopy.

After lunch on your own, continue to explore Ghana’s powerful history with a visit to its infamous forts, castles, and slave dungeons. At Cape Coast Castle, originally built by the Swedes in 1653 and later taken over by the British, you’ll gain deep insight into the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Learn about the complex relationships between European slave traders and African kingdoms, and stand in the dark, airless dungeons where countless enslaved Africans were held before being shipped across the Atlantic. The experience is haunting and emotional, offering a profound connection to a chapter of history that still echoes around the world today.

Day 4

Fishing Village Experience & Elmina Castle (Slave Dungeon) Tour

Discover Elmina, a coastal village where charm meets grit, offering both scenic beauty and deep reflection. What better way to truly experience this unique place than by diving into its heart, fishing? Spend time with local fishermen as they share the nuances of their craft and the challenges they face daily on the water.

Then, visit the village’s fishmongers, who will guide you through the fascinating process of smoking fish in traditional earthenware ovens. This hands-on experience reveals one of Ghana’s oldest and most vital trades.

After a break for lunch on your own, head to Elmina Castle, also known as St. George’s Castle, a historic site built by the Portuguese in 1482. Here, learn about the complex history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, examining the role of European traders and the African tribes involved.

In the castle’s dark, suffocating dungeons, witness the harrowing conditions that enslaved individuals endured before their forced journey across the Atlantic. Standing in this somber place is a powerful, poignant reminder of the cruelty of the slave trade.

Day 5

Elmina – Assin Manso – Kumasi City Tour (Naming Ceremony)

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and drive through the forest zone to Kumasi, the seat of the Ashanti Empire, to explore the legends of the famous Ashantis, whose legacies are still evident today.

En route, stop at Assin Manso to visit the site of Donkor Nsuo, the former Slave River and market, the final transit point for a large number of enslaved Africans. This is also the final resting place of two ancestors whose mortal remains were returned from the USA and Jamaica and re-interred there. After this, take part in a naming ceremony.

Upon arrival in Kumasi, you visit the Manhyia Palace Museum to gain firsthand insight into the history and legacy of the Ashanti Kingdom. The museum showcases relics and artifacts that trace the regal history dating back to the 1700s.

Afterward, enjoy a relaxed city tour featuring historic monuments and landmarks that celebrate the power, pride, and resilience of the Ashanti people.

Wrap up your day with a visit to the National Cultural Center, where you’ll explore the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and have the opportunity to witness artisans at work, including brass makers, potters, and batik creators. This cultural hub offers a deeper connection to the craftsmanship and artistic traditions of the Ashanti people.

Day 6

Exploring the Ashanti Craft Villages

After breakfast, depart from your hotel and spend the day exploring the rich artistic heritage of the Ashanti Region with visits to three of its most famous craft villages.

Your first stop is Ahwiaa, renowned for its skilled woodcarvers. Here, you’ll watch artisans transform blocks of wood into beautifully detailed stools, masks, and figurines, each piece deeply rooted in Ashanti symbolism and tradition.

Next, travel to Ntonso, the center of Adinkra cloth production. You’ll learn about the history and meaning behind the Adinkra symbols, which are hand-stamped onto fabric using natural dyes. You’ll even have the chance to try stamping your own cloth, an interactive and memorable cultural experience.

Continue to Bonwire, the birthplace of the iconic Kente cloth. Watch as master weavers create stunning patterns using vibrant threads, each design carrying specific cultural significance. The rhythmic clatter of the looms and the vibrant colors make this visit especially captivating.

Throughout the day, you’ll not only observe traditional craft-making techniques, but also have the opportunity to purchase handmade items directly from the artisans who create them, supporting local livelihoods while taking home a piece of Ghana’s living culture.

Day 7

Kumasi – Besease Shrine – Accra

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin your journey back to Accra. Along the way, make a stop at the Besease Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located near the town of Ejisu. This traditional fetish shrine is one of the most important spiritual centers of the Ashanti people.

Each shrine in the area is dedicated to a specific spirit, or obosom, who serves as a mediator between the people and Nyame, the supreme god in Ashanti belief. At Besease, you’ll observe the shrine’s unique earthen architecture, richly decorated and deeply symbolic, as well as the sacred practices that honor the ancestral spirits.

It’s a rare opportunity to witness traditional worship and understand the spiritual foundations that continue to influence Ashanti culture today. After this insightful stop, continue your drive to Accra. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 8

Nature & River Adventure – Shai Hills & Volta River

Embark on a refreshing escape into nature with a day trip that blends wildlife, scenic landscapes, and river relaxation.

Your day begins with a scenic drive from Accra to the Eastern Region, where nature, wildlife, and river views await. Depart your hotel and head first to the Shai Hills Resource Reserve, a peaceful haven of savannah plains, rocky hills, and caves. Located just about 90 minutes from Accra, the reserve offers a chance to spot wildlife such as baboons, antelopes, and a variety of bird species, all set against a backdrop of striking natural beauty.

Continue your journey to the Afrikiko River Resort, beautifully set on the banks of the Volta River. Nestled beside a lush 35-acre conservation park, the resort provides easy access to vibrant greenery and is home to rare species of butterflies and birds—a true nature lover’s retreat.

One of the highlights of your visit is a relaxing one-hour boat ride on the majestic Volta River. As you glide across the calm waters, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape and catch a glimpse of the iconic Adomi Bridge, a landmark of engineering and beauty.

After soaking in the serenity of the river and exploring the natural wonders of the day, return to Accra in the late afternoon, refreshed and inspired by Ghana’s rich natural heritage.

Day 9

Excursion to Aburi Botanical Gardens & Asenema Waterfalls

Our day begins with a scenic drive from Accra into the cool, green hills of Ghana’s Eastern Region, where the historic Aburi Botanical Gardens await. Established in 1890, these gardens are a tranquil haven filled with towering palms, exotic plants, and winding paths shaded by century-old trees. It’s the perfect place to unwind, take stunning photos, and learn about Ghana’s rich botanical heritage.

After soaking in the calm beauty of the gardens, we continue to the peaceful Asenema Waterfalls, a hidden gem nestled near Akuapem Mampong. Surrounded by lush forest, the gentle hike to the falls leads you to a serene cascade flowing into a shallow pool, ideal for dipping your feet or simply enjoying the soothing sounds of nature.

With its refreshing scenery and peaceful atmosphere, this day offers the perfect blend of exploration and relaxation. After taking in the beauty of both sites, we return to Accra with memories of a truly rejuvenating experience in Ghana’s natural landscape.

Day 10

Farewell & Departure

After breakfast, spend the remainder of the day packing and doing last-minute shopping. Transfer to the airport for check-in and final departure back home.
