Nestled in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Lake Bosomtwe stands out as the country’s only natural lake, filled by rainfall and enclosed in an ancient meteorite crater.

Its rich geological history, deep-rooted legends, welcoming resorts, and scenic beauty make it one of West Africa’s must-visit natural destinations, perfect for those interested in the history of Lake Bosomtwe, touring the lake, and enjoying peaceful lakeside relaxation.

Lake Bosomtwe Location & Geological Origins

Located about 30 km southeast of Kumasi, Lake Bosomtwe is perfectly centered in the Ashanti Region at approximately 6.5057° N, 1.409° W . This crater lake was formed roughly 1.07 million years ago by a meteorite impact, creating a basin about 10.5 km across, now filled with water to form a deep circular lake about 49 km² in surface area and 45 m deep.

Lake Bosomtwe Legends And Mysteries

Ashanti oral tradition credits the lake’s discovery to Akora Bompe, a hunter from Asaman, around 1648. He was chasing an injured antelope (“Otwe” in Twi) when it vanished into a pond. Convinced by the sacred power of the water, he settled nearby and named the place Bosomtwe, meaning “antelope god”.

Local beliefs describe Bosomtwe as a sacred site: the souls of the departed come here to bid farewell to the goddess Twi or Asase Ya, and strict taboos once prohibited iron from touching the water or using regular metal boats, fishermen instead use wooden padua planks propelled by hand or wooden paddles .

Cultural Rituals & Spiritual Traditions

Around the lake are over 25 villages (historically around 30), each maintaining shrines or fetish groves. A focal site is the Abrodwum Stone, spiritual heart of the lake.

In times of poor harvests or fishing yields, villagers perform ceremonies, sometimes led by the Asantehene (king), bringing sacrifices such as cows, whose innards are offered to the stone and whose meat is thrown into the lake for communal gathering.

Even though Christianity later spread through the area, many people still hold onto their traditional beliefs, especially when seeking help during hard times or illnesses.

Today, approximately 23,000 people reside in the 27 communities surrounding Lake Bosomtwe. The lake remains a spiritual center for many, and visitors often come to pray or seek blessings.
